A New Perspective
Strength from within……….
April 6th, 2009
There is strength in all of us. At times it may be difficult to see that strength, but it is there. Last year I had the pleasure of attending the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Man and Woman of the Year 2009” kickoff. It was a moving experience for me. I spent the night speaking with business owners, leukemia survivors, and others with various forms of cancer. Their stories were mesmerizing.
Scanning the room that night, I took in all that lay before me. All people had a story...some happy, some sad, some in the midst of drama. I watched the collection of business owners filtering around the room mingling and networking. I watched the resort staff professionally attending to food, drinks, and the like. Kristin Hoke from WPBF-TV 25 appeared with Jon Shainman from out of nowhere, bright, beautiful, and vibrant. What do all of these people have in common I wondered?
The answer came to me in the form of a small child. A child that stood before us all, proud, strong, yet vulnerable as he stood by his mother’s side. I listened with tears in my eyes as his story unfolded. Diagnosed at age 3 with leukemia, he fought diligently for his life and at a healthy 9 years of age he stood before us in remission. Remission. A child...Age 9...In remission. This is enough to give even the toughest individual chills down his spine. No one, especially the young and innocent, should have to experience such an ordeal.
The answer you ask? Looking across the room at the guests, the employees, the survivors I realize that we all possess such incredible inner strength. You see it in the business people networking to promote their legacy. You see it in the resort staff proudly doing their jobs. You see it in a little boy’s smile knowing the battle he has fought and won. You see it in the mother at his side who watched...no experienced...his struggle to recover. O my….it is all so very inspiring.
When faced with adversity it is often out natural instinct to withdraw or to depend on outside sources for strength. Although there is something to be said for a solid support system, that which ultimately pulls us out of the quicksand of peril is our own inner drive.
Our 9 year old boy would not be with us today without that inner strength. I applaud him. We applauded him that night. In the face of adversity, don’t doubt yourself. Take solace in the fact that the strength is there. The gloves are off. There is not an adverse situation out there that is a match for the strength that lies within you. Look around...Others possess that strength...So do you. sp
